Inspired by the futuristic racing video game “Wipe’out”, scientists at the Japan Institute of Science and Technology created a real-life model race track with liquid nitrogen cooled model ships which, as a result of the Meissner effect, are placed in a state of quantum levitation, permitting them to move around the track in mid-air.
The Meissner effect in action. A demonstration of superconducting levitation using liquid nitrogen. Called quantum locking in the video, a pick is locked in three-dimensional space, but can still move if acted upon.
