I came upon these two on the sidewalk. They were having a conversation. “Excuse me,” I said, addressing the girl: “I’m sorry to interrupt, but is there anyway I can take your photo?”

“Why would you want my photo?” she asked.

“Because you look beautiful,” I said. And she did. She was Sudanese. There is a very distinct beauty among people from the Sudan, and she was filled up with it. Suddenly the man cut in:

“I was just telling her she was beautiful,” he said.

Naively, I assumed I had just walked up on one stranger giving a compliment to another. I wanted to capture the moment. “Let me take your photograph together,” I said. The man seemed reluctant, he started smiling nervously and inching away. But the girl called him back.

“Come take a picture with me,” she said. Encouraged by her attention, he returned. She put her arm around him, and I took the photo.

As I examined the photos on my camera, the man started whispering to the girl. She answered him in a loud voice: “I told you! I’m not that kind of girl.” She seemed agitated now. Finally sensing that I had misread the situation, I stepped between them. The man began hurrying down the sidewalk.

When the man left, the girl’s demeanor changed completely. She seemed shaken. Her eyes were tearing up. “He just offered me five hundred dollars to go out with him,” she said. “And then when I said ‘no,’ he offered me one thousand. Why does this always happen to me?”

“It happens a lot?” I asked.

“All the time,” she said. “I’m sorry I’m getting emotional. I just can’t go out of my house without this kind of thing happening. I have a son. I’m a mother. I would never degrade myself like that. I just don’t understand why this keeps happening.”

“Do you mind if I tell this story?” I asked.

“Please,” she said. “Tell it.”

When I think about the sound of rock and roll, one particular sound always comes to mind first: the sound of a wall of black faced Marshall guitar amps. It was that sound which drove the music of Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Ritchie Blackmore, and millions of other guitarists. Marshall amplification has been a part of my sound since I first picked up a guitar. The JCM 800 remains my favorite amp of all time. Jim Marshall O.B.E., the inventor of Marshall amplification has passed away. He was a brilliant man. So much great music owes its existence to his work.

Goodnight, Ziggy. You were a wonderful little Xbox 360 who I have happily enjoyed since launch. You dared the impossible, never once getting the dreaded Red Ring of Death. If only your optical drive kept ticking, we could enjoy another game together.

You’ll go back in your original box, and there amongst my collection of great video game consoles, you will hang out and remember the times we blasted vector geometric shaped aliens, saved survivors in a mall full of zombies, raced exotic Italian sportscars, helped take down Third Echelon, and especially saved a kingdom from the Darkness.

I saw The Hunger Games today. The theater was empty but for a few stragglers that came in after the lights dimmed. It was a great movie, every bit deserving of the rave reviews it’s been getting. Unlike Twilight, this film was properly made and edited. The production didn’t appeal to the lowest common denominator. This is how The Running Man would have been made today. The sound editing was some of the best I’ve seen in recent years. Rue was a heartbreaking character, and the little girl that played her did a splendid job. However, after I learned she was black human child and not an albino elephant or some kind of tree frog, or even a giant killer robot, I was less interested.

I don’t know who the chick in the music video preceding the previews was, but she was gorgeous.

I took a snapshot of an opinion poll on the Fox News website at the moment. The poll asks the question, “Should women be forced to see a sonogram before having an abortion?” You can anticipate the results, sure, but you need to look closer and scrutinize the options. Understand how the available answers have been framed. Study the language. Then you will see how dishonest Fox News is.

Option A actually argues that women should be free to make uninformed medical decisions. It does not specifically answer within the scope of the question asked. It takes the most extreme position that a pro-choice supporter can take, and it is an unreasonable position advocating for uninformed medical consent.

Option B actually says women should be made aware of all implications, thus advocating for informed medical consent. Both pro-choice and pro-life respondents can answer with this option. Thus, the wording makes this poll heavily weighted towards option B. This option does answer within the scope of the question asked.

Options C and D are the only options that specifically address a sonogram. C argues sonograms should be optional and D implies that sonograms will be mandatory for the woman in stating that it should be mandatory for the would-be father whenever possible.

Three of the four possible options answer in the affirmative by default. They are de facto “yes” votes in the poll. They will be interpreted as pro-life responses in comparison to the extreme first option; however, a pro-choice respondent could feel comfortable selecting any of the four options.

Although the question is not framed as a pro-life vs pro-choice poll, this question exists solely in the domain of women’s reproductive rights. This poll is skewed to make readers think that an overwhelming number of people are pro-life. Bad poll questions create bad numbers. Bad numbers warp reality.
